Genesis 3 #catechesis/bible/genesis
[!abstract] The serpent’s craft. The fall of our first parents. Their punishment. The promise of a Redeemer.
Book: Genesis · ← Genesis 2 · Genesis 4 →
1
EN Now the serpent was more subtle than any of the beasts of the earth which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman: Why has God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise?
^1
2
LA Cui respondit mulier: De fructu lignorum, quæ sunt in paradiso, vescimur:
EN And the woman answered him, saying: Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat:
^2
3
EN But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God has commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die.
^3
4
EN And the serpent said to the woman: No, you shall not die the death.
^4
5
EN For God knows that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.
^5
6
EN And the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and fair to the eyes, and delightful to behold: and she took of the fruit thereof, and ate, and gave to her husband, who ate.
^6
7
EN And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves aprons.
^7
8
LA Et cum audissent vocem Domini Dei deambulantis in paradiso ad auram post meridiem, abscondit se Adam et uxor ejus a facie Domini Dei in medio ligni paradisi.
EN And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God, amidst the trees of paradise.
^8
[!note]- And the eyes, etc…
Not that they were blind before, (for the woman saw that the tree was fair to the eyes, verse 6.) nor yet that their eyes were opened to any more perfect knowledge of good; but only to the unhappy experience of having lost the good of original grace and innocence, and incurred the dreadful evil of sin. From whence followed a shame of their being naked; which they minded not before; because being now stript of original grace, they quickly began to be subject to the shameful rebellions of the flesh.
9
LA Vocavitque Dominus Deus Adam, et dixit ei: Ubi es?
EN And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where are you?
^9
10
LA Qui ait: Vocem tuam audivi in paradiso, et timui, eo quod nudus essem, et abscondi me.
EN And he said: I heard your voice in paradise; and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.
^10
11
EN And he said to him: And who has told you that you were naked, but that you have eaten of the tree whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?
^11
12
EN And Adam said: The woman, whom you gave me to be my companion, gave me of the tree, and I ate.
^12
13
Quæ respondit: Serpens decepit me, et comedi.
EN And the Lord God said to the woman: Why have you done this? And she answered: The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
^13
14
EN And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this thing, you are cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon your breast shall you go, and earth shall you eat all the days of your life.
^14
15
EN I will put enmities between you and the woman, and your seed and her seed: she shall crush your head, and you shall lie in wait for her heel.
^15
[!note]- She shall crush…
Ipsa, the woman; so divers of the fathers read this place, conformably to the Latin: others read it ipsum, viz., the seed. The sense is the same: for it is by her seed, Jesus Christ, that the woman crushes the serpent’s head.
16
EN To the woman also he said: I will multiply your sorrows, and your conceptions: in sorrow shall you bring forth children, and you shall be under your husband’s power, and he shall have dominion over you.
^16
17
LA Adæ vero dixit: Quia audisti vocem uxoris tuæ, et comedisti de ligno, ex quo præceperam tibi ne comederes, maledicta terra in opere tuo: in laboribus comedes ex ea cunctis diebus vitæ tuæ.
EN And to Adam he said: Because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded you, that you should not eat, cursed is the earth in your work: with labour and toil shall you eat thereof all the days of your life.
^17
18
EN Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, and you shall eat the herbs of the earth.
^18
19
LA In sudore vultus tui vesceris pane, donec revertaris in terram de qua sumptus es: quia pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris.
EN In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread till you return to the earth out of which you were taken: for dust you are, and into dust you shall return.
^19
20
LA Et vocavit Adam nomen uxoris suæ, Heva: eo quod mater esset cunctorum viventium.
EN And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living.
^20
21
EN And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.
^21
22
EN And he said: Behold Adam has become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now therefore lest perhaps he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.
^22
23
EN And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken.
^23
24
EN And he cast out Adam: and placed before the paradise of pleasure Cherubims, and a flaming sword, turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
^24
[!note]- Behold Adam, etc…
This was spoken by way of reproaching him with his pride, in affecting a knowledge that might make him like to God.
